What is CBD?

There’s been a lot of media coverage about CBD over the past few years as it has become popular for medical and recreational uses with near-nationwide legalization.

But what is CBD? Is it marijuana? Is it oil from marijuana plants? Will it make you high?

In this blog, we will answer those questions, among others. We want to address the important facts for you to know about CBD so you can make an informed choice about whether or not it is right for you.

Literally: What is CBD?

CBD stands for ‘cannabidiol’ which is an active ingredient in the cannabis plant. There are three distinct species of flowering cannabis plants: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. CBD is collected from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant, which is a Cannabis sativa plant that has 0.3 percent or less THC.

Marijuana and hemp are closely related, but not classified as the same plants, mainly due to their chemical composition. Without getting too much into the differences between marijuana and hemp, know that they both come from the “Cannabacae family” of flowering plants and have different uses based on their unique chemical characteristics. Although CBD can be found in marijuana, it’s one of the hundreds of components and is better cultivated through hemp.

Does CBD Get You High?

Will CBD get you high? The short answer: No. Cannabidiol will not get you high. In fact, this is one of the most common misperceptions about CBD. Before anyone samples any product that has CBD in it, that should be understood first and foremost.

CBD, unlike THC, does not have any psychoactive components to it, so it’s not going to give anyone the sensation of being high. Whether taken for medical purposes or simply added into your favorite baking recipes, CBD will not leave you in an altered state of consciousness.

What is CBD Good For?

Treatment for children suffering from seizures

But, the studies that have been conducted have shown CBD to be very effective in treating some of the worst childhood epilepsy diseases. CBD was used to treat Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which are debilitating syndromes that cause seizures. These epilepsy syndromes are resilient to antiseizure medications, and yet CBD has shown such positive results as treatment the FDA cleared the first-ever cannabis-derived medication to treat the syndromes.

CBD Treatment for pain

For decades, marijuana has been considered by many to be an excellent pain treatment. But the scientific community often debated about the efficacy of these claims, regardless of many people saying marijuana helped them through some of the worst pain they had ever experienced. CBD is not necessarily marijuana — it is a compound found within marijuana but can also be derived from hemp.

Science is finally coming around to the pain-relieving properties that CBD can provide with its unique, naturally occurring chemical properties. In recent studies, CBD has been shown to reduce chronic pain by minimizing inflammation and soothing neurotransmitters in our endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is involved with regulating appetite, sleep patterns, and pain and immune system response.

CBD Treatment for anxiety and depression

There have been different studies conducted that test for CBD’s ability to relieve disorders associated with mood and social behaviors. What could be making CBD effective in treating these disorders is its ability to help regulate the brain’s receptors for serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for the balance of mood and behaviors.

Some studies have even shown efficacy for CBD oil as a treatment for children suffering from sleep disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders.

As CBD becomes more widely adopted, studies from the scientific community will increase and likely prove that the positive effects of CBD for anxiety and depression are real. For people looking to stay away from psychopharmaceuticals and approach anxiety and depression from a natural health and wellness standpoint, CBD could be the answer they are looking for.

Is CBD Legal?

What is CBD in the eyes of state and national laws? Well, the answer is not completely straightforward, but we will help you best understand how CBD is legal for procurement in the United States in 2020.

CBD is legal on the federal level across all 50 states in the United States. However, some states have outlawed it completely. South Dakota, Nebraska, and Idaho have banned the sale of CBD on the stale level, and consider it an illegal substance at this time.

Of the remaining 47 states that permit the sale and purchase of CBD, two broad groups remain: fully-legal states and conditionally-legal states. In fully-legal states, you can purchase (in-store or online), possess, and consume hemp-derived CBD. In conditionally-legal states, you can purchase, possess, and consume hemp-derived CBD, but you need to follow that state’s particular guidelines.

Some states allow for the purchase of marijuana-derived CBD products, which have a higher concentration of THC compared to hemp-derived CBD products. Others regulate its use in food, or mandate certain labeling requirements. These guidelines vary from state to state and should be understood before purchasing CBD products.

CBD comes in a variety of forms and is consumed in a number of ways. This includes tinctures, gummies, foods, lotions, and hemp flowers that are below regulated THC levels. Cannessentials offers a variety of products for individuals looking to use CBD as a natural remedy.
