So, you’ve decided to start using CBD for all of its amazing health benefits. Or maybe you’re considering trying out a tincture or a lotion just to see how it goes. But then something occurs to you… Does CBD show up on a blood test? Is a CBD drug test something you should worry about?
The short answer? No, CBD will not show up on a blood test. However, the real answer is a bit more complicated than that. Let’s look at the details so you can have all of the information.
What Is CBD?
- Pain relief
- Stress & anxiety reduction
- Reduced symptoms of depression
- Improved sleep
- And more!
Unlike THC, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana, CBD does not make you feel “high.”

Is CBD Illegal?
Before we get into the testing portion of the article, let’s discuss CBD’s legality first. If there were no question about the legality of the substance, then drug testing would be a non-issue.
But the fact is that CBD’s legality is a bit of a grey area in the United States.
Federally, the law states that hemp and hemp-derived products are legal. This includes CBD products that are derived from hemp. In order for these CBD products to be considered legal under federal law, though, they have to contain less than 0.3 percent of THC.
However, CBD is also found in other types of cannabis besides hemp, which means that CBD can be extracted from marijuana. Marijuana-derived products are not legal under federal law, including CBD extracts & products.
CBD products derived from marijuana are legal in states that have legalized marijuana use (medically and/or recreationally), but they’re not legal federally.
You can see how it gets a bit confusing, which is why many people want reassurance that their drug test won’t come back with a negative and get them in trouble with the law.
Does CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?
So, all that being said: does CBD show up on a blood test? Or a urine test? Or another type of drug test?
The answer is usually no. Because CBD is non-intoxicating and non-psychoactive (not to mention legal when derived from hemp), few drug tests actually test for CBD. However, if the test is testing specifically for CBD, then it would show up in the results.
The THC Problem
The main problem for CBD users and drug tests is THC, which is what most drug tests test for when looking for marijuana use. As we mentioned before, in order to be federally legal, CBD products must be hemp-derived and contain less than 0.3 percent THC.
Despite the level being much too low to provide any intoxicating effects, THC still can be present in both hemp and marijuana-derived CBD products. So, theoretically, you could test positive for THC even if you’re using a federally legal, hemp-derived CBD product.
However, this is extremely rare as most blood and urine tests have to detect a higher concentration of THC than exists in hemp-derived CBD products. Marijuana CBD products, on the other hand, can have much higher levels of THC and can definitely lead to a positive drug test.
Often, false positives from the use of CBD products are the result of improperly tested or unregulated CBD products.
One study from 2017 tested ten different CBD products. Seven out of ten were found to contain different levels of CBD than it stated on the label, and one in five contained higher levels of THC than stated.
When buying CBD products, be sure to but from a reputable source that has undergone third-party testing to ensure you’re getting the best possible product with the least chance of a false positive drug test.

What’s the Bottom Line?
So, does CBD show up on a blood test, urine test, or whatever other kinds of tests? No, since these tests aren’t testing for CBD.
What they are testing for is THC, which could theoretically result in a positive outcome even if you’re using completely legal CBD products. However, the chances of this happening are extremely slim, especially if you’re getting your products from reputable sources that have third-parties test their products.
At Cannessentials, we use third-party testing on every single one of our products to ensure unbiased, safe, and accurate results. Check out our safe, effective, and legal CBD products on our website!
